Week One Wrap-Up

Well, I survived week one of dog training school! I'm finally on the up-swing of this cold bug that hit its low-point on the first day of school. Seriously folks, it was miserable. Each day has gotten better, and I'm really starting to fall in love with my batch of firsties!

Today, I wanted to run guided reading groups, since I haven't gotten a chance to hear them read on their own yet. As a warm up, we used these super awesome whiteboards (that clearly aren't white, I just don't know what else to call them) to play "mystery word." Silly little game that's not a game at all but they love it. We use Reading Street, so our first phonics skill is the short a sound. I told the kids that I was thinking of a short a word, but I could only give them clues as to what letters to use. I told them the letter sounds, and they wrote the letters. I have this bunch of kiddos wrapped around my little finger. I told them it was super awesome, so it WAS super awesome. The "color-boards," I'll call them, are from the Target Dollar spot. They weren't actually a dollar, I think they were actually closer to $3, which is a boldface lie, target DOLLAR spot, but I digress. I bought enough for each kid in my reading group to use one. They're fun colors and they make me happy. Well worth $3. I plan on using them to teach close reading strategies later on this year.

We also used the decodable readers that come with the reading series. The "stories," if you can actually call them stories, are filled with that week's phonics skill so we LOVE digging out our highlighters and being "word detectives" to find all the words that match the skill. As you can see, at the start of the year, that's 99.9% of all the words in the whole book. They loved it because, again, I told them it was "super awesome." Plus, highlighters are like candy. So are band aids, but I digress.

Daily 5 has been WONDERFUL thus far. I'm sticking to the schedule in the back of the book, so today we did day 4, and talked about how to choose a spot to read. Since those little firsties are eating out of my hand, I told them we were going to try reading to ourselves for SEVEN minutes today, which resulted in many cheers and smiles. I told them they did SO well that Monday we might even try NINE minutes!! (Insert more cheers and smiles.) I'm loving it. So so much. It makes so much sense for the way I instruct my kids anyways, I can't believe I haven't been doing it all along. Do you Daily 5? Any tips?

If you started back this week, too, I hope it went well!!

Day 2... Check!

Hello! Today was MUCH better than yesterday. It may or may not have had something to do with the magical pharmaceutical cocktail I pounded before school and then again at lunch. Praise the lord for sudafed.

Anywho, I tried to take a few pics of some things we've done over the last 2 days, but am still stuck with my dreadful reliable iPhone 4 with a dreadful meh camera.

First day of school is always a whirlwind. I started off by giving my firsties a tour of the school that included a trip to the cafeteria with our lunch numbers so we could practice putting those pesky numbers into the keypad then walking to our lunch table. Don't ask my how 2 of my kids managed to lose their lunch numbers between the entrance to the kitchen and the checkout computer. When we got back, I read one of my favorite first day of school books, Wemberly Worried. Love her. She cracks me up. What I love most about this book is that while some of her worries are things that students might actually worry about, the majority are silly worries, which always lightens the mood of my students. We spend so much time talking about our own silly worries that they practically forget that they're supposed to be worried about school. After reading the book, I gave my kiddos some time to write about what makes THEM worry, and we made this adorable (and super easy) Wemberly craft. The writing prompt and the craft are both from this awesome FREE Wemberly pack that was made by one of my favorite PA bloggers, Wendy, from Read With Me ABC.

We also started this awesome first week of school book. Each day they write a new page for the book about what they did that day. Love love love it. It's part of this back to school pack, that's also filled with TONS of other awesome activities that I can't wait to use! Great TpT find...

Today, I started introducing Daily 5 to my kids. I'm going to try my best to follow the suggested pacing guide in the back of the book, so today we talked about reading the words and reading the pictures, as well as expected behaviors during Read to Self. Right now, it sort of feels a little like dog training, but I think we'll get there! Overall, I was impressed at how well they responded to it, and can't wait to practice again tomorrow!

Today, I also used David Goes To School to introduce our school rules, the "4 B's..." (Be respectful, be responsible, be honest, be safe.) I LOVE LOVE LOVE David Shannon books, especially the David series. My kiddos were laughing SO hard, and it was very easy to create this list of "No David" behaviors and "Yes David" behaviors. Loved the conversations we had. I wrapped it all up with this fun little David craft, that's also FREE on TpT here. Another wonderful find!!

Have you done anything fun to start the year? I'm always looking for new ideas!

Sniffles to Start the Year

Well, I survived the first day... barely.

I've been fighting a cold since the end of last week. Started out as just coughs, which were manageable with dayquil and some cough drops. Well, today, I woke up with a nose that wouldn't stop running, and sneezes so violent I thought my insides were going to fly out.

On top of all this, I forgot that first graders start the year as kindergarteners. Who knew?! I had visions of the "end product" in mind, and when the kids that walked in my door were nothing near that, I was a little frazzled. Nothing too crazy, just typical start-of-the-year behaviors that need squashed.

I had wonderful intentions of taking tons of pictures of our activities, but I never got there. I'll try to take some tomorrow. We DID do some really fun things I'd love to share, but I just couldn't find it in me to go "above and beyond" today. Here's hoping that my nose stops running and that I can actually enjoy a day with my kids tomorrow!

Did YOU start school yet?? How'd it go?? Do tell!!

Teacher Week - Taming the Flock

HEY HEY! Day 4 of Teacher Week '13 with Blog Hoppin' is all about classroom management tips! Sit back, relax, and hopefully you'll find my tips useful!!

At my school, we are constantly referring to the "4 B's." They are as following:
*Be Respectful
*Be Responsible
*Be Honest
*Be Safe

I decided to adopt them in my room as well, since the students are encouraged to follow them throughout the building. Essentially, these are my "rules," since I don't use a traditional set of rules in my classroom.

Here's a picture of what they look like in my room... I put some examples with them as references for my kiddos.

Like I said, I don't use "rules." I don't have a set of consequences, either. I don't even use an individual behavior plan for my students. I realize that many of you now think I'm crazy (that is, if you didn't think that already). For all you non-believers, HEAR ME OUT.

In my class, I have adopted a form of the "warm fuzzy" jar. I didn't snag a picture of it because I wasn't in my room today, AND because it's seriously nothing fancy at all. Just a jar that I fill with pom-poms.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS.

During the first few weeks of school, I talk about the 4 B's, and what it means to follow them both inside and outside of the classroom. They catch on pretty quickly. Every morning before lunch, and every afternoon before we leave, I give my students the opportunity to vote on how many warm fuzzies I should add to the jar. Each time we vote, they can earn up to 5 total. We spend tons of time talking about what a 5 looks like in the classroom (they know that a 5 is an "above and beyond" what's expected type of morning.) I give them a minute or two to talk to their neighbors about what they think we should earn. Then I focus attention back to me and ask a few students what they think AND WHY. This is the important part, and where it all comes together like they're eating out of my hand.

Once it's up and running and they're used to it, it is very typical to hear things such as "I think we earned a 3, because it was a GOOD morning, but we weren't really trying our hardest" or "I think we deserve a 2 because there were a few friends that were not being responsible during Word Work."

OMG. I LOVE IT. They are so brutally honest. The students also know that I can add or remove warm-fuzzies as I see fit. If they get compliments in the hall, I'll add a few. If I see someone making poor decisions in the classroom, I'll take the lid off as a "warning." They tend to immediately fix said behavior.

I love this system for many reasons. My students hold themselves accountable for their own actions. My students know that a good day is not based completely on THEIR behavior, but it is also based on the behavior of our class as a whole. I also dislike set consequences such as losing recess. My 30 minute recess block is my precious time to breathe and think, and when I put students in the room during that time, who am I really punishing??

When the jar gets filled, we vote on a class reward. Rewards in my classroom are very simple, require very little teacher involvement, and I make them seem like the COOLEST thing in the world. Lunch in the classroom is like magic. So is 15 extra minutes of recess. When they get to keep playing while the rest of the grade lines up? They think they're on top of the world.

Anybody else out there that uses a system similar to this? I'd love to hear how it works for you!!

Teacher Week - Organization!

Good evening, ya'll! Day 3 of Teacher Week with Blog Hoppin' is all about organizing for instruction. First off, let me deeply apologize to you for the slightly less than perfect crappy pictures... I only had my phone with me. I used to have a nice camera on my iPhone 5, until said iPhone 5 went swimming in the pool.
Here's a few ways that I'm hoping to keep my STUDENTS organized this year! I'm going to implement the Daily 5 in my room, and had the hardest time figuring out how it was going to work... I want the students to meet with both my aide and myself every day, so I'm treating it as "5 rounds" as opposed to "5 stations." Throughout the morning, they will follow this schedule... I made the "Meet With Mr. Vinton" and "Meet With Mrs. Shope" cards to slide anywhere, and even be removed if I need to do running records, etc... I have 4 reading groups, and they'll track their color through all 5 rounds.

I also made this checklist for my students to keep in their book bins. Since they'll only have time for 3 choices per day, they will use a dry-erase market to check off what they've done. Once the checklist is full, they'll erase it and start over. I'm hoping this will guarantee balance among the 5 components.

As for organizing MYSELF, I found these amazing chevron accordion folders in the dollar spot at Target. I'm using them to organize my "I Can" Statements by category (language, speaking & listening, writing, etc.)

Now for my FAVORITE organizing tip!! I took all the literature standards and informational text standards and grouped them into 2 binders...

First page of each binder has an entire list of those standards...

Now for the REALLY fun part... I used one sheet protector for each standard, and labeled them in the top right corner. Each pocket has the corresponding "I Can" Statement AND graphic organizers that can be used to reinforce each specific standard. I KNOW, RIGHT?! I found this amazing bundle of first grade common core graphic organizers by A Year of Many Firsts, which is one of my favorite blogs to follow!!

One of my favorite pieces of furniture in my room is this amazing Monday thru Friday drawer set, which was in my room when I moved in, so I can't even begin to tell you where it's from! It's fantastic. I use it to prep my materials for the week AND for the following week... I have a laminated piece of paper in each drawer that says "Next Week's Materials," so that I can prep for the next week underneath the current week's materials. It's brilliant. I can' take credit for it, as the dividers were in place when I got there. To whoever put those there -- thank you!!

And FINALLY. The last way that I'm trying to stay organized this year....... Guess what came in the mail today?? I LOVE LOVE LOVE my new Erin Condren teacher's planner!!

Off to start filling in my planner! Tune in tomorrow for classroom management tips! I've got a few fun ones :-)
